Final Examination

The Final Examination is the preparation of a personal Web site. You should then load it into the class directory on newton.uor.edu and test it. The site should have the following characteristics.

Directory Structure

  • The main directory for your site should be named with your Last name, first letter upper case.

  • Inside the main directory should be a directory named Images, first letter upper case, where all the graphics you use are kept.

  • Your main HTML file should be your last name with the html extension, eg Last_name.html, first letter upper case.

The Main Page

  • The top of Last_name.html should have the UofRHeader.GIF centered in a table with a border of 2.

  • Last_name.html should contain a picture of you, or someone else you would like to pass off as you. You can come to the Jones Center and have your picture taken, and then prepare it for use on your site, or scan a picture and prepare it. The picture should appear on the left side of the page

  • To the right of the picture should be your pedigree. That is your full name, current title, schools and degrees, and previous positions.

  • There should be a link to your department's home page, if it has one.

  • Also, you should have your current building and office number, your office phone. extension and any other pertinent information on the page. You might want to list your email address there, in case your email for doesn't work.

  • There should also be a LINK to a FORM EMAIL page which will send you an email message composed on that page.

  • There should be a link to a page which contains your complete resumé.

  • There should be a link to a page where you explain your interests and provide links to at least two websites which are related to each interest.

  • At the bottom of the page should be the web boilerplate. That is, there should be some indication of where the site is housed, who maintains the site and way to contact that person, when the page was last updated, and what the total URL of the page is. See the bottom of this page for ideas on what should be there.

  • There should also be links to the U of R "official website" at www.redlands.edu, the "campus website" at newton.uor.edu, the campus map at newton.uor.edu/CampusMap.html.

The Form Email Page

  • This page should be similar to the one you wrote as an exercises in Lesson 15. I would suggest you look around on the campus website for one that pretty much does what you want, and "borrow" the code.

  • Modify the ACTION attribute to contain the correct path to your ".txt" file. I suggest using tables to make the different fields line up nicely.

  • You will have to write the TEXT file to go with it, since that is not available to you in the VIEW menu.

The Resumé Page

  • The resumé should be in a standard form. Use style tags to highlight and lists to make things clear. You may want to use tables or lists to achieve the formatting you want.

  • I would put a link to the Form Email page on the top of the resumé for easy communication.

The Interests Page

  • This could be a place to explain your research, recreational, intellectual, and travel interests. You don't want it to be too overwhelming, but a way for people to get to know a bit more about you.

  • Use one or more of the web search engines such as Excite, Yahoo, or Lycos to find links to include on this page. You might look at the links on the campus web site. In the right side menu is a link called WWW LINKS, which has links to things that people on the campus have recommended.

Other Things at the Site

  • You might want to add other pages to the site. For example, some people put in a page that has photos of their family on it.

  • Others add pages that contain descriptions of the courses they teach and the methods they use, and the syllabi for those courses.

  • You might want to create a web brochure (see Barbara Pflanz's web pages) for your department and link it to both your page and the department's page.

  • If you are adventurous, you could learn to do OCR (Optical Character Recognition) and turn your departments catalog copy into a word processing document by scanning it with OmniPage in the WestLab. Then you could use Adobe Acrobat Express to turn that into PDF files and put it on the web with links from your department page.

  • Any other ideas you may have. You can get some by looking at campus websites around the country. Remember many of them were created by professional designers who were paid vast amounts of money to make the college look good. ;-)

Finishing Up

  • Finally, you should use Fetch to create your directory (Last_name) inside of the class directory on newton. You can do that under the Directories menu.

  • Remember to set the Permissions for that directory.

  • Transfer all your files and the Images directory into your directory into the directory "class" on newton.

  • Set the Permissions for each of your files and the Images directory. You will access your page with a web browser using the URL

    http://newton.uor.edu/class/Last_name/Last_Name.html

I hope this has been fun!!!!!!!!
