Preparing a Graphic for Us on a Web Site
What follows is a listing of steps to help you get your graphics ready to put into HTML pages. The best way to do this is to read through this paper, so that you get the gist of things, and then go to the Jones Center and get one of the lab coordinators to sit down with you while you do it.
You can scan photos, slides, 35mm negatives, pictures in books, etc. Please be aware of copyrights at all time.
- On WestMacs 1, 6, 8, and 10, open PhotoShop 4.01.
- On WestMacs 1, 8, and 10 go to IMPORT in the FILE menu and select SCANTASTIC. On WestMac 6 select SprintScan 35. That is a slide or 35mm negativescanner.
- Click the Preview button to preview the scan. This will save you lots of time. Set the scanner to scan the picture (or slide, or negative) at 600dpi or so.
- On WestMac 6, (slides or negatives), set the width in the scanning window to 5" if it is in landscape and 3" if it is in portrait. On WestMacs 1, 8 10, (these are photo or other picture scanners), leave the size alone.
- Scan the slide, negative, photo, or picture. I should open up in Photoshop.
- If the rulers are not showing at the top and sides of the scan, select Show Rulers in the View menu.
- 7. Select the Cropping Tool from the Marquee menu in the upper left side tool palette.
- Use the "Cropping" tool to select how you wish to crop the picture, and then go to under the Image menu.
- Under the Image menu select Adjust and then Brightness/Contrast. Move the slides until you get the brightness and contrast you want. Click OK.
- Under the Filter menu choose Sharpen and then Unsharp Mask. Click OK.
- Under the Image menu, select Image Size and set the width to 4" if the scan is in landscape and 3" if it is in portrait. Click OK.
- Return to the Image menu and in Image Size change the "Resolution" to 72 pixels/inch. That is all that can be shown on a computer monitor. Click OK.
- In the File menu, select Save as, and where it says Format drop the menu and select either JPEG or CompuserveGIF, or any other GIF format. Give the graphic a name. I suggest that you append .ps if you are saving it in PhotoShop format, .JPEG if it will be in JPEG format, and .GIF it will be in GIF format.
- Now all you have to do is move it to the proper directory and use it in your web page with an <IMG SRC=...> tag.
- If you are using the Scanner on WestMac 7, you have to use special scanning software outside of PhotoShop. It is called FotoLook SA and you should find it in the Aliases window. After you launch it, select Scan under the File menu and essentially do what is suggest above to scan. When you have scanned, save the scan to the Documents folder in PhotoShop format (put .ps as an extension), and then open PhotoShop (If it is not already open) and open the scan in Photoshop. Do as above.
