COMPUTER SCIENCE: The Program
Posted on October 22, 2003

The computer science major leads to a bachelor of science degree and is
designed to prepare students both for graduate studies and for a variety of
professional careers in the computer field. It combines the teaching of
particular computer skills (programming, problem solvong, programming
languages, and software engineering). It is not enough in this program to learn
about computers and programming. Students must define problems, design,
implement and test their solutions. Students get practical experience in the
classroom and complete an independent senior project. Students have access to
the six different computing labs at the Jones Academic Computer Center in
addition to the networked PC lab at Hentschke Hall; these labs have high-end
PCs and Macintoshes that host a wide range of software packages. A geographical
information system lab with multiple workstations and a digital and art imaging
lab with related hardware and software are also available.
