Sociology and Anthropology
Mission Statement
The Sociology and Anthropology Department offers a broad array of courses on various aspects of social
life worldwide.
- We regard our disciplines as liberatory enterprises: we seek to free peoples from the social structures
and prejudices that keep them from directing their own lives. As such, ours are value-laden disciplines.
- At the same time, we believe that human liberation is impossible without clear, scientific analysis
of the social problems and processes that keep people unfree. We thus approach our subject matter with the objectivity
of scientists.
Our program thus combines passion and dispassion into a whole that we believe gives our students a well-rounded
liberal arts education.
