University of Redlands Sociology and Anthropology DepartmentSpecial Programs pick: Deparmental Honors
Departmental HonorsThe department maintains an active honors program that provides two routes to obtain departmental honors. Both involve rigorous work and are signs of excellence in the disciplines. Recipients will receive a certificate of honors; those recipients who have also maintained the grade average required by the University will receive a notice of honors on their diplommas. See the Chair of the department for further details. Capstone HonorsStudents may achieve honors through their capstone projects, undertaken in the senior year in connection with SOAN 400: Integrative Capston Seminar. Those projects that show excellence in their planning, execution, and presentation will be awarded honors by affirmative vote of the department faculty. Research HonorsStudents may seek Research Honors through an independent major research project not connected with the Senior Capstone. Those interested should begin planning their projects by the end of the junior year, in consultation with a member of the departmental faculty. Project proposals must be presented to the full department by early in the Fall semester of the senior year. If approved by the faculty, the student will carry out the research and write up the results. A formal presentation will occur during Spring sememster. A schedule of deadlines is available from the department secretary. The faculty will award honors to those projects that show excellence in planning, execution, and presentation. return to top
InternshipsStudents in both the major and minor programs are encouraged to take advantage of the department's internship opportunities. Students may choose to work in numerous public and private community service agencies, grassroots organizations, or museums. A maximum of one internship (3 credits or more) can be used to fulfill the major or minor requirements. Please see any of the departmental faculty for further information. return to top
Cross-Cultural StudyThe department is dedicated to providing students with information about cross-cultural opportunities. Enhanced knowledge about other countries and their cultures, or about subcultures within the United States, provides a more comprehensive understanding of society. Majors are strongly encouraged to participate in one of the programs available through the University for study off-campus. The department is also willing to work with students independently to set up opportunities for foreign and domestic travel that are tailored to the students' particular program of study and interest.
