Teaching & Research Interests: European and European intellectual history in the modern period. Hegel, Marx, Nietzsche. Philosophy of history.

Tharp’s teaching responsibilities include courses in European civilization and world history; in European thought and culture at the turn of the twentieth century and from 1945 to the present; and in historiography and political extremism. A regular contributor to the Johnston program in integrative studies, Tharp has offered Johnston seminars on Hegel, Marx, Nietzsche, Foucault, Western rationalism, political extremism, and Nazi Germany. Tharp is currently working on a study of Hegel, contradiction, and time.
