Homework

All homework is due at 1:00 pm on the day indicated

Tuesday 9/9/08 - 1.3, 1.5, 1.7, 1.9
Tuesday 9/16/08 - 2.4, 2.7, 2.11, 2.12, 2.16, 2.22
Tuesday 9/23/08 - 2.27, 2.28, 2.29, 2.30, 2.34, +
Hints: 2.27: see problem 2.1(c); solution for K is a transcendental equation that must be solved graphically.
2.28: assume the wave arrives from the right and write solution in terms of g=hbar2 k/2m alpha and phi=4ka
Thursday 10/2/08 - 3.3, 3.6, 3.8, 3.9, 3.11
Hint: 3.11: use hint from 2.22b for the integral
Tuesday 10/14/08 - 3.13, 3.15, 3.16, 3.17, 3.22, 3.27, 3.30, 3.31, 3.32, 3.37, plus chapter 3 summary and e-mail message.
Tuesday 10/28/08 - 4.2, 4.3, 4.8, 4.11, 4.13, 4.18
Tuesday 11/4/08 - 4.21, 4.23, 4.27, 4.29, 4.31, 4.34
Thursday 11/13/08 - 5.4, 5.6, 5.9, 5.12
Thursday 11/20/08 - 8.1, 8.3, 6.1, 6.4 (a) only, 6.6, 6.9
Hint 8.1: put square root terms on one side before squaring, but you will still have a square root after that. Plug in En0 and again get square root term alone. Square again and you will be on the right path.
Hint 8.3: Finding T should be relatively easy, proving it is the same as T from Problem 2.33 is the hard part. Begin with solution from 2.33 and put in terms of gamma, then assume gamma is large, with this assumption you should show that the solution to 2.33 is a constant times the solution to 8.3.
Tuesday 11/25/08 - 6.12, 6.13, 6.17, 6.19
Hint 6.13: In problem 4.43 s is NOT spin, it merely represents the power to which r is raised. The solution to 4.43c is that the expectation value of r^s = (s+6)!/6! x (3a/2)^s.
Hint 6.19: Do the expansion (see equations 4&6 in
binomial expansion) in stages, starting from the most buried term (sqrt[(j+1/2)^2-alpha^2] expanded to alpha^2, then plug this into the next most buried term (just the fraction) and expand that to alpha^2. Plug that result into the ()^-1/2 term and expand to alpha^4.
Tuesday 12/2/08 - Write a one-page summary of Chapters 6 & 8 and e-mail to me by 1 pm. Include what the point of these chapters is; physically, what are they doing? Also include a very brief summary of the mathematical methods.

Final Exam

The final exam consits of 3 parts, each worth 50% of the final exam grade. You must choose only 2 parts that you will do.
