"This is the Spanish Conquest, which happened
not once in 1521, but over and over. And perhaps not only in one
direction, but back and forth: it was surely an Indian conquest of
the Spanairds as they took up the eating of chocolate and tomatoes and
tamales. Or, as the cut stone of the Aztec temple was reassembled
in the old sort of paved plaza, into a Christian church this time, and
the Indian missions stood in the churchyard playing their ancient tunes
on their Indian instruments (to a Virgin of a different name)-what was
surrendering to what? Who was surrendering to whom?" (Weismann,
Art and Time in Mexico, 1985).
