This altar was built in in 1717-1737
by Jeronimo de Balbas, a Spaniard from Seville. It is here that the
Churrigueresque (Ultra-Baroque, extremely ornate) style can be seen in
a fully developed phase. Baroque art involves the viewer, reaching
out to create an emotional reaction. This sense of interaction between
object and spectator reaches a new height when the Aztec love of ornamentation
is added. The altar is alive with twisting curves and gesturing statues.
The eye is drawn from detail to the next and no space is left blank.
This unique twist of Baroque art is found only in the New World.
