Shah Abbas I
ruled Iran from 1588 to 1629 and is best known because he made Iran a competitive
economic power which challenged both the Ottomans
and the Mughals for trade, land,
and regional dominance. Until his reign, the Safavid capital had
remained in the north-western part of
Iran, the city of Tabriz. With brilliant fore-sight, Shah Abbas moved the
capital to Isfahan in central Iran.
