Introduction

When surfing the net, you can never tell what products work and which fail to measure up to their advertisements.  Many people try products and are disappointed.  Well, we have decided to save you the hassle of buying another product blindly. We found Colloidal Silver being advertised on web at the address www.utopiasilver.com.  It was being marketed as a cheaper way to not only get rid of illnesses, but as well as an agent that would help prevent illnesses. According to the product description,” it is a very effective antibiotic.  It kills pathogens including bacteria, viruses, yeast, mold fungus and parasites.”  All you have to do is take a few teaspoons of Colloidal Silver everyday and you remain healthy. There were multiple testimonials regarding efficacy of Colloidal Silver. Some things sound too good to be true.  It was our goal to test Colloidal Silver to see if it is in fact too good to be true. The reason was because there was not much evidence or data given on the website to back those claims up...read more.

Materials/Method

We spread the bacteria C600 on 4 plates, and bacteria from a rollie pollie on 4 others.  Then we added 140 mcl of either Kanamycin, Streptomycin and a mystery antibiotic on six out of eight plates.  These results showed that all of the antibiotiColloidal Silver had an effect on the C600, but were not successful on the bug juice...read more.

Results:

Fifty microliters of the bacteria C600 were spread onto separate petri dishes and then 10 mircoliters of either Kanamycin or colloidal silver which were pipetted onto the plates to test the effectiveness of each antibiotic. When colloidal silver was paired against Kanamycin, the results were obvious that Kanamycin proved much more effective against bacteria. On the plates where colloidal silver were spread against the bacteria, the plates were all cloudy, despite the amount of silver spread. There were also numerous little colonies around the area the silver was spread. Kanamycin, however, left a clear area with only a few little colonies around the outside of the area that Kanamcyin was spread. ...read more

Discussion

After multiple experiments and hours of recording data, we have decided that Colloidal Silver isn’t exactly what the websites claim it to be. The claims that have been made in favor of Colloidal Silver are that it has the ability to kill virtually anything. Colloidal Silver does in fact kill bacteria, but not to the extent that the website claims.  We tested the Colloidal Silver against three other antibiotics; Kanamycin, Streptomycin, and Ampicillin.  Our data consistently showed that Kanamycin was the most effective against the bacteria C600, by killing more colonies of bacteria than Streptomycin, Kanamycin, and Colloidal Silver.  The next most powerful antibiotic was Ampicillin and then Streptomycin.  They both showed the ability to kill colonies of bacteria in large quantities.  The Colloidal Silver did decrease the number of bacteria growing on the agar plates, but did not show the results proving that it killed all bacteria...read more.
