1862- Grant Takes Forts Henry & Donelson.

Battle of Fredericksburg.

Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. (TAP)

1865- American Civil War ends and the Reconstruction era begins. (ERL3)
1875- At the age of thirteen, Wharton published a collection of juvenile verses, which she had to do at her own expense. (ERL1)

1875-Civl Rights Act is passed. (TAP)

1885- Married Edward Wharton who was a Boston banker.(ERL1/(ERL2)
1897- Wharton publishes The Decoration of Houses. This was a book on interior decoration with whom Architect Ogden Codman helped write. (ERL1)
1889-Wharton publishes a collection of short stories called The Greater Inclination.(ERL2)
1902- Wharton publishes her first novel, The Valley of Decision.(ERL2)
1902- Henry James publishes The Wings of the Dove. (TIM1)

Note: Henry James was a long time friend of Warton.

1903- Henry James publishes The Ambassadors. (TIM1)

1905- The House of Mirth is published. The story is about a woman who has lost her place in society.(ERL2)

1905- In the Ladies’ Home Journal, Grover Cleveland made a note that, “Sensible and responsible women do not want to vote. The relative positions to be assumed by man and woman in the working out of our civilization were assigned long ago by a higher intelligence.” (TIM1)
1906- 1919 - Woman Suffrage sweeps Europe. (ERL3)
1907- Moves to Paris.(ERL2)
1907- Henry James publishes The American Scene. (TIM1)

1910- The Man Act is adopted by Congress to stop the transportation of women across state lines for prostitution. (TIM2)

1911- Ethan Frome is published. This was known as a “tragic novella,” the story takes place during a harsh winter in rural Massachusetts. (ERL2)
1912- Henry James publishes A Small Boy and Others. (TIM2)
1913- Divorced her husband. (ERL2)

1914-1918- Served as a relief volunteer in France during the First World War. For her participation in World I, Wharton was granted an award the by the French Legion of
Honor.

1918- Published The Marne.

1918-On June 25th, a U.S. Marine brigade captures Bouresche and Belleau Wood. (TIM2)

On July 17th, the second battle of Marne is fought. (TIM2)

On Sept. 17th, American and French troops attack an enemy position in the Argonne Forest. (TIM2)

Pulitzer Prizes are established. (TIM2)

On Nov. 11th, Germany signs the Armistice Treaty. (TIM2)

1920- The Age of Innocence is published. (ERL2)

1920- The passing of the 19th Amendment gives women the right to vote. (EM3)

U.S. Government forms the Women's Bureau. (TIM3)

1921- Received the Pulitzer Prize for The Age of Innocence. She was the first woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize. (ERL1) (ERL2)
1922- The Supreme Court states that the 19th Amendment is constitutional. (TIM3)
1923- Became the first woman to receive a doctorate from Yale. (ERL1) (ERL2)
1923- First Electronic TV. (EM3)
1929- Hudson River Bracketed is published. (ERL2)
1929-"Black Tuesday". The day of the great stockmarket crash and the end to the Golden Twenties. (TAP)
1934- A Backward Glance is published, this was Wharton’s autobiography. (ERL2)  
1937- On August 11, 1937, Edith Newbold Wharton bought the farm. (ERL2)
1937- The U.S. passes the Neutrality Act of 1937. (TAP)
