The islands of Japan have fostered many different types of art, from ancient Jomon ceramics and Haniwa horse sculptures to contemporary steel skyscrapers and Japanimation (anime). We'll explore these aspects of Japanese culture and more, including Japan's relationship to the continent (China) and the variety of religious traditions during Japanese history. We will also read illustrated stories, including the Tale of Genji and others, look at the interrelationship of western painting and Japanese painting in the nineteenth century, and explore the connections between ceramic and calligraphic arts and the tea ceremony. Get ready to be immersed in Japanese visual culture for a semester! This course counts as part of an East Asian Studies concentration.
